Health > Aussie Health Tests

These are the 14 most common heath issues or tests that concern the Australian Shepherd.  I have tried to list what kind of sample is required, where it should be sent, application requirements, body function affected, associated costs, etc.

Each test is broken down in to required, recommended, and recommended for Breeders areas. The required tests are to be done before breeding.
ASCA Code of Ethics           USASA Code of Ethics

Minimum Requirements to be done before breeding:
Hip Dysplasia

Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA)
Congenital Cardiac
DNA - Becomes required under ASCA Litter Registration guidelines 1 January 2010
Elbow Dysplasia
Multi Drug Resistance Gene (MDR1)
Patellar Luxation
Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
Hereditary Cataracts (HSF4)

Other Recommended Tests just for Breeders:
Pelger Huet
Coat Color
Dilute Gene Carrier

Approximate cost for one Aussie to be completely tested for all tests and submitted to all banks listed on this page: ~$1000.00

The piece of mind having a fully tested, Health Cleared, and Certified Aussie: PRICELESS! :)

The links above are strictly for the Australian Shepherd, all other affected breeds have been placed on there own page, Canine Health Diseases.
